Give Thanks in All Circumstances: A Friday Reminder That God Was in Your Ordinary Week

Petal KitchenOctober 23, 20265 min read

"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." — 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

It's Friday. And if your week looked anything like mine, you're standing in your kitchen right now doing a little mental inventory — and the list is mostly made of what didn't happen.

The dinner that got burnt on Tuesday. The lunchboxes that ran out of ideas by Wednesday. The grocery run you meant to make and sort of... improvised around. The patience you promised yourself you'd have, and the moment at 5:47 PM on Thursday when you very much did not have it.

Mama, I've been there. I've ended weeks feeling like I survived them more than I lived them.

But here's the thing about this verse. Paul didn't write it from a spa day. He wrote it to a church under real pressure, and he didn't say "give thanks for all circumstances." He said give thanks in them. In is the key word. It's not pretending the hard week was easy. It's choosing, right in the middle of the mess, to look for where God showed up anyway. Because He did. He always does.

What This Verse Actually Means for a Busy Mom

When I first read this verse, honestly, it felt a little heavy. God's will is gratitude? On a week like this one?

But gratitude in Scripture isn't a feeling — it's a discipline of noticing. It's the daily choice to count the evidence of God's goodness instead of cataloging your shortcomings. The Israelites literally built altars out of stones so they wouldn't forget what God did. Gratitude was how they trained their own hearts to remember.

And your kitchen? Your kitchen is full of altars, mama. Every meal you made this week — the good ones and the ones the kids complained about — was a small act of provision, a quiet "God, I trust You with my family today." You didn't just cook. You kept a promise of love all week long.

Three Small Ways to Give Thanks This Friday

1. Thank God for the meals that flopped, too. The scorched pasta, the "everyone ate cereal" night — those count. God's provision isn't only in the beautiful dinners; it's in the grace that covered the imperfect ones. Thank Him that your family was fed, even when the meal wasn't Pinterest-worthy. Gratitude for the flopped dinners is some of the most honest gratitude there is.

2. Start a Friday table ritual. Tonight, or at your next family meal, go around the table and have everyone name one thing they're thankful for from this week. Kids included — their answers will surprise you (and probably make you laugh). It takes three minutes, and it slowly rewires your whole family to be noticers of God's goodness. That's discipleship happening over meatloaf.

3. Thank Him for the invisible wins. Nobody claps when the fridge gets restocked. No one sees the five-minute prayer you whispered while the pasta water boiled. But God does. Hebrews says He is not unjust; He forgets nothing. So tonight, thank Him for the invisible things you did this week — because He saw every single one.

A Short Prayer for Tonight

Lord, thank You for this week — the whole of it. The parts that went well and the parts I'd rather forget. You were in my kitchen, in my mess, in my tired moments, and You never left. Help me end this week counting Your goodness instead of my failures. Open my eyes to see what You saw in me all along. Amen.

From My Kitchen to Yours

I built Petal Kitchen because I believe feeding your family is one of the most faithful things you'll ever do — and you shouldn't have to do it exhausted and winging it. Let it plan the dinners, build the grocery list, and take the 5:47 PM decision fatigue off your plate, so you have more of yourself left for the people around your table.
