Do Not Worry About What's for Dinner: A Tuesday Reminder That God Already Knows

"So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them." — Matthew 6:31-32 (NIV)

It is 11 AM on a Tuesday and I am already thinking about dinner.

Not because I am excited about it. Because I am anxious about it. The fridge situation is unclear. The kids had opinions about last night's dinner that were not exactly encouraging. And somewhere between the school drop-off line and the second cup of coffee, the question snuck in again: What am I going to make tonight?

If you have ever stood in your kitchen at 4:45 PM with no plan, no thawed protein, and three sets of eyes waiting for you to perform a miracle, you know exactly what this verse is talking about.

Not the deep theological version. The real, Tuesday version.

What This Verse Actually Says to a Busy Mom

Jesus is in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount. He has just told His listeners not to worry about their life, what they will eat or drink, or what they will wear. And then He gets specific.

Do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?'

He names the exact words. The exact anxious inner monologue. Because He knows we do not just feel worry. We speak it. We narrate it. We run it on a loop in our heads all day long.

What am I going to feed them? Do I have enough? Will they eat it? Is this good enough? Am I doing enough?

And then comes the line that shifts everything: Your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

Not your heavenly Father will figure it out later. Not your heavenly Father might remember. He knows. Right now. He already knows what your family needs to eat today. He knows what you need. He is not surprised by the empty fridge or the picky eater or the budget that feels tight this week.

What If You Stopped Running After It?

Jesus draws a contrast. The pagans run after these things. They chase. They scramble. They let the question of what shall we eat consume their whole day.

And honestly? That is what I do. I let the dinner question eat my Tuesday before dinner even happens. I carry it like a weight from morning to night, and by the time I actually cook, I am exhausted from the worrying, not the cooking.

But Jesus is inviting us into something different. Not into laziness or apathy. Into trust. Into the kind of peace that says: God knows what my family needs. I can plan, I can prepare, I can show up. But I do not have to carry the anxiety of provision on my own shoulders. He already has it.

Three Ways to Live This Out in Your Kitchen This Week

1. Start your morning with this verse before you start your to-do list.

Before you check the fridge. Before you open the group chat about dinner ideas. Before the anxiety spiral begins. Read Matthew 6:31-32 and let it settle you. Remind yourself: God already knows what we need today. That includes dinner.

2. Make a plan so the worry has nowhere to live.

Here is the thing. Trust does not mean winging it. Trust means you do your part and let God handle the rest. When I have a meal plan for the week, the what shall we eat question loses its power. It is already answered. I am not running after it all day because it is already settled.

This is genuinely why I built Petal Kitchen. Not because I love apps. Because I was tired of the dinner anxiety stealing my peace every single day, and I wanted a tool that would answer the question for me so I could stop chasing it.

3. When dinner goes sideways, remember the verse.

The kids hate it. The recipe flopped. You burned the rice. Again. In that moment, the old voice comes back: See? You are not doing enough.

But Matthew 6:31-32 says your heavenly Father knows what you need. Not what you need to be perfect. What you need to be sustained. Fed. Cared for. Loved. Even when the dinner is a disaster, you are still held.

Order the pizza. Say a prayer. Laugh about it. God knew this would happen too.

A Short Prayer for Today

Father, thank You for knowing what my family needs before I even ask. Thank You for seeing the dinners that go well and the ones that do not. Help me to stop running after the worry and start trusting that You have us. Give me peace in my kitchen today. Amen.

You Were Never Meant to Carry This Alone

The dinner question was never supposed to sit on your shoulders like a boulder. God knew what your family would need today before the sun came up. He knows what they will need tomorrow too.

Your job is not to be perfect. Your job is to trust, plan, and show up. And let Him handle the rest.
