Where You Go I Will Go: A Sunday Devotional for the Mama Who Keeps Showing Up

But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God." — Ruth 1:16 (NIV)

Can I tell you what I thought about this morning, standing at my counter with flour on my hands? I thought about how nobody writes love songs about moments like that. Nobody sees them. It's just a Tuesday-shaped Sunday, eggs and toast, a toddler tugging at your leg, coffee gone cold again. And yet that quiet, unseen showing up is the very shape of love that Scripture calls holy.

That's exactly what Ruth said to Naomi on a dusty road out of Moab. Naomi had lost her husband and both sons. She was bitter, broken, and heading home with nothing. She told Ruth to go back, to build a life somewhere else, somewhere easier. Ruth could have. Nobody would have blamed her. Instead she clung to her mother-in-law and said the words we still whisper three thousand years later: Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay.

Here's what strikes me about that promise: it wasn't grand. Ruth didn't vow to do something extraordinary or heroic. She vowed to stay. To keep walking beside one tired, grieving woman. To make Naomi's people her people and Naomi's God her God. It was a promise made of ordinary faithfulness, the kind that doesn't trend or get applause, the kind that just keeps showing up one morning at a time.

Mama, that is what you do every single day.

When you get up and make breakfast even though you're exhausted, that's Ruth-love. When you sit across from your child at dinner and ask about their day for the fourth time this week, that's Ruth-love. When you pack the lunch, wash the dish that's been sitting in the sink since yesterday, and do it all again tomorrow without a single person noticing, you are speaking Ruth's words in your own kitchen language: where you go, I will go.

And here's the beautiful part of the story. Ruth's ordinary faithfulness ended up in the lineage of Jesus Himself. God took a young widow's stubborn, everyday love and wove it straight into His redemption story. He does the same with yours. The small acts of showing up for your family are not small to Him. They never were.

So how do we live this verse out this week, in real kitchens and real schedules?

First, stay present in the small moments. Ruth's promise wasn't about one big gesture; it was about walking alongside someone day after day. This week, let one meal a day be a no-phone meal. Just you, your people, and the food God provided. Presence is the whole point.

Second, love the person in front of you, not the ideal in your head. Ruth didn't wait for a better season to commit. If your kitchen is loud, your kids are picky, and your table has a wobbly leg, love them there. Perfection isn't the requirement. Faithfulness is.

Third, let someone be your Naomi, too. Ruth and Naomi walked together; neither carried it alone. If this season feels heavy, send the text, accept the casserole, sit at your friend's table and let her serve you. Staying close works both directions.

A short prayer for today: Lord, thank You for Ruth's example of love that stays. Help me see my everyday showing up the way You see it, as holy and meaningful. Give me strength for this week's meals and this week's moments, and let my kitchen be a place where Your faithfulness is passed down. Amen.

This is honestly why I built Petal Kitchen. Not to add one more thing to your plate, but to make the showing up a little lighter: a plan for the week, dinner ideas that don't take all evening, and a way to nourish your family without running on empty. If your Sunday could use a little help stepping into the week with peace instead of panic, come take a look. I'd love to walk this road with you. 🌸 petal-kitchen.com
